No, seriously! Are you smarter than a 5th-grader?

1-minute reading time

By Mary Boza Crimmins

No, seriously! Are you smarter than a 5th-grader? Of course, you are!

But sometimes we need a refresher course on what we learned in school. Here are four practical proofreading pointers.

1. WAIT! You should wait at least an hour before proofreading. Why? You’re less likely to catch your mistakes when you check your document as soon as you’ve completed it.

2. READ ALOUD! You should read ALOUD what you have written so you can hear odd phrasing or poor sentence structure.

3.  USE APPS! Use spell check and Grammarly, but understand that these apps may not catch all necessary revisions. Grammarly sometimes makes suggestions that change your voice or objective. You’re not only smarter than a 5th grader; you’re also smarter than the algorithm.

4. GO BACKWARD! Check your document by beginning with the last word and work backward. Check one word at a time.  Why backward? Your brain is more likely to identify errors because you’re reading individual words rather than content.

5. DELEGATE! Contact me so you can delegate your copywriting, content writing and research. My work is guaranteed and within your budget.

Writing takes time and focus, which is why you should add a fifth pointer  - DELEGATE. Delegate your copywriting, content writing and research to Crimmins Communications. My work is guaranteed and within your budget. Call me today at 407.408.8178 to schedule a time to talk. It's free.
